Overview

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in non-geostationary (NGSO) satellite systems dedicated to communication services.

Various NGSO Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) constellations, such as O3B, ONEWEB, SpaceX, LEOSAT, MEOSAT, NORSAT, 3ECOm, and OMNISPACE, have been proposed and registered with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) across S, C, Ku, and Ka bands. Coordinating non-geostationary satellite systems poses unique challenges compared to traditional geostationary systems due to their more complex nature. These NGSO systems typically require large spectrum bands to establish viable business cases. Consequently, it becomes crucial to develop suitable sharing schemes that allow multiple systems to utilize the same frequency bands.

The objective of the project was to develop a software simulator called CONSTELLATION. This simulator enables the assessment of operational and technical conditions that constellation operators should adopt. It also generates recommendations to be utilized in international forums. By leveraging CONSTELLATION, operators can make informed decisions and contribute to the establishment of effective sharing frameworks, ensuring the successful coexistence of multiple NGSO satellite systems.
