Overview

The objective of the study was to explore potential technical solutions for designing a reliable TT&C (Telemetry, Tracking, and Command) system that can effectively operate during superior solar conjunctions.

These conjunctions pose challenges due to phase and amplitude scintillation, which adversely affect the ability to maneuver when the Sun-Earth-Probe (SEP) angle is less than 5 degrees. After analyzing data gathered during superior solar conjunctions of Mars Express (MEX) between 2013 and 2015, as well as Cassini between 2001 and 2002, a mathematical model was derived and used in simulations. This model facilitated the evaluation of the current ESA TT&C system in terms of link performance. Furthermore, software tools, a baseband and an end-to-end simulator, were employed to propose and assess technical solutions in different areas such as modulation, coding, and system diversity.

Finally, the study addressed the necessary implementation steps for the identified solutions and presented a roadmap for the next 10 years.
